Pieces
Of Three
A Mixed Media Photography Exhibition
By
Joe Gato
Capturing stories
through a unique glimpse extends a potent moment within a broader world.
Exploring architecture and physiology with the dynamic tones of contour and
energy, Joe Gato utilizes photographic techniques and composition to express
interactive movement and structure. By accenting imagery cropping with light and
texture to enhance perspective, Gato’s photographic visions convey poise with
layered abstracts and a personal tone. Gato's still shots offer sculpted views
that reflect a calm introspection and a simplicity in the geometric shapes.
"My artwork is
austere, quiet and elegant. I photograph with a technique and a visual timbre
that extends a respect for those talents who were humbling through their
simplicity."
Gato is a native of
Cuba who grew up in New York and initially moved to Miami for 3 years in 1987,
before returning in 1995 and taking up an extended residence. As part of a
formal education curriculum, Gato studied film and photography at CW Post
College, The Fashion Institute of Technology and New York University Film
Department. After 23 years of photography, Gato sites the creative and technical
aspects of Federico Fellini, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Francesco Clemente,
Eugene Smith, Cartier Bresson and Richard Avedon as elemental directors and
fundamental guides for his own pieces. To expand his approach and perspective,
Gato worked as an assistant for Bill King in 1984. Throughout an expansive
career Gato has furthered his hands-on experience with a series of photographers
including Helmut Newton, with whom he shot a selection of Conde Nast magazine
photographic features in 1999. Joe is currently working on a new photographic
series that combines the training and performance of ballet dancers and boxers.
